What is a Btox?
Botox is a protein and an exotoxin produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum.
Botox applications can be an easy and reliable method used to soften or eliminate facial expression lines that become more pronounced with age.
Botox injections can be considered the gold standard, especially for reducing fine lines such as those between the eyebrows and on the sides of the eyes, known as crow’s feet.
How does it affect?
Botox can interrupt the transmission between nerves and muscles, meaning it can prevent the nerve’s command from being transmitted to the muscle.
As a result, the muscle may temporarily cease contraction, and this relaxation can help soften the facial expression lines caused by muscle contractions.
Could there be swelling in the treated area?
Botox is not a filler substance. Therefore, there may not be swelling or fullness in the treated area.
With the relaxation of the muscles in the injected area, wrinkles and lines can soften, resulting in a calmer and rejuvenated appearance of the face.
When does the application take effect?
After the Botox application, its effects can begin to show around 3-4 days, and it might take up to 15 days for the full effect to become evident. It’s important to note that this duration can vary based on the individual’s dosage.
What precautions should be taken?
After the procedure, it’s important to avoid environments with excessive steam, such as steam rooms, saunas, and SPAs, for 15 days. Avoid massaging the treated area. There may not be any issues with bending forward, exercising, or lying face down.
Where is Botox applied for excessive sweating?
When applied to sweat glands, Botox can significantly reduce sweating. It can be applied to the underarms, palms, and soles of the feet to alleviate sweating and eliminate odor.
Apart from aesthetics, for what other purposes is Botox commonly used?
It’s also highly effective in treating migraines, headaches, and teeth grinding.
How long does its effect last?
While the duration of Botox injections’ effects can vary based on individual factors and the dosage administered to the treated area, they typically last around 4-6 months on average. When the effects of Botox wear off, the facial expressions and lines in the treated area may appear lighter compared to before.
Consistently applying Botox to the same area through five or six sessions has been observed to prolong its effects.
Who is eligible for treatment, and is there an age limit?
Anyone experiencing lines or wrinkles caused by facial expressions, whether they are 18 or 70 years old, can benefit from Botox injections. When starting Botox treatment after lines or wrinkles have become well-established, it may need to be complemented with filler injections. Successful outcomes can be achieved when the treatment is initiated before the lines become deeply ingrained.
Neck Botox (Nefertiti)
Botox applied along the platysmal bands extending from under the chin down the entire length of the neck is referred to as ‘neck Botox’. Due to genetic and environmental factors, vertical platysmal bands can develop in the neck area. This can make the neck appear shorter and saggy (turkey neck).
These bands can create a tightened appearance. Applying Botox to the neck area can reduce the activity of the muscles that shorten the platysmal bands. As a result, the neck can appear graceful, elongated, firm, and youthful (swan neck).
Jaw Botox
In cases of teeth grinding (bruxism), both aesthetic and dental and jaw joint issues can arise due to grinding of teeth during both day and night. Individuals with bruxism exert intense force on their teeth, dental roots, and even the jaw joint. This can lead to pain in the jaw joint, temples, neck, and head regions.
Excessive teeth grinding can lead to enamel erosion and permanent dental defects. The jaw joint may become irreversibly compromised. Aesthetic concerns include an appearance known as “square face” due to excessive enlargement of the chewing muscle (masseter hypertrophy).
For individuals who undergo masseter Botox, the roundness in the face and angular appearance of the jaw can potentially improve. The face may appear slimmer and longer, and the jawline may become more defined. Patients can often notice a decrease in the strength of the chewing muscle and an improvement in the jaw’s appearance immediately after Botox treatment.
Nasal Tip Botox
There is a group of muscles (M. depressor nasi) that attaches to the lower parts of the cartilaginous septum and pulls down the tip of our nose. This muscle group forms one end that constantly moves downwards during speech and laughter due to its connection with the lips. Nasal tip Botox injection can prevent the nose tip from moving involuntarily while speaking, eating, and smiling.
By relaxing the M. depressor nasi muscle with Botox, the nasal tip can be lifted by about 1-2mm, and its movements can be minimally affected during lip actions. Additionally, it can enhance nasal projection (nasal elevation).
Individuals who show gum while smiling, have gum issues, or wear braces often experience social discomfort due to gum visibility. Nasal tip Botox can help relax the M. depressor nasi muscle, potentially reducing gum visibility.
Corner of the Lip Botox
Lips can be one of the most significant aesthetic components of the face. Downturned corners of the lips can give the face a sad, tired, and anxious expression. Some individuals unknowingly overuse the muscles that pull the lips downward.
Restoring the lip line to its normal level can lead to a positive aesthetic improvement in facial expression. In this case, Botox injections can be beneficial in alleviating the appearance of a sad expression on the face.
