Otoplasty (Prominent Ear) Surgery in Turkey

Otoplasty

The cartilage folds that give shape to the earlobe may develop inadequately and appear non-existent and no fold is visible in the upper part of the ear. Even if the earlobe curves are well formed, if the angle between the ear and the scalp is more than necessary, the ears rotate forward and look like scoops from the opposite perspective. These two conditions can be seen together or separately.

The relevant problem is corrected during cosmetic ear surgery, that is, if the cartilage fold is insufficient, the fold is formed; if the angle between the head and ear is excessive, the angle is narrowed by laying the ears on the scalp. Sometimes both procedures can be done together.

When is cosmetic surgery for prominent ears carried out?

More than 90% of the development of the auricle is completed around 5-6 years of age. Therefore, if the ears are clearly prominent cosmetic ear surgery should be done before the child starts school at the age of 5-6 to prevent possible psychological pressure in school and avoid psychological trauma. However, the child must be willing to have the procedure, otherwise, ear surgery should be postponed to a more advanced age.

Non-prominent ear cases can be corrected later at 13-14 years of age.

How is cosmetic surgery for prominent ears carried out?

It can be performed by local anesthesia after age 13-14. However, if the patient is young or does not want to be operated with local anesthesia, general anesthesia is applied. An incision is made behind the ear in surgery, the cartilage is freed. The fold is reinforced by placing stitches in the inadequate fold area. Furthermore, in order to guarantee the continuity of the fold, the cartilage in front is leveled with a procedure to break the resistance of the cartilage. Finally, the skin is closed.

How is the process after cosmetic ear surgery?

There are no serious pain after cosmetic ear surgery. The patient carries a light dressing for the first two days, subsequently the dressing is opened and the patient showers. It is recommended to maintain the dressing for 5-6 days for the manifestation of the cartilage grooves in the auricle. There may be mild swelling and bruising in the ears during the first week but this is no obstruction to returning to social life.

What are the post-surgical complications of cosmetic ear surgery?

Serious complications rarely develop after cosmetic ear surgery. Infection and accumulation of blood (hematoma) may develop, however, problem free healing is ensured by taking early measures.
