What is an ulthera?
Ulthera is a non-surgical facial lifting procedure that targets the effects of time and gravity on the skin, addressing sagging, loosening, and waviness. It does not require extensive social downtime and focuses on the deeper layers of tissue.
Ulthera utilizes micro-focused ultrasound technology to lift and tighten the skin’s SMAS layer through ultrasonic sutures, creating a ‘non-surgical facelift’ without injections or surgical procedures. In the Ultherapy system, the technology known as ‘Deep sea’ employs ‘focused ultrasound’ to create ‘hotspots’ in the underlying layers of the skin. This process prompts the skin’s natural repair mechanisms and stimulates the production of new collagen. The skin may first experience a lifting effect, followed by a sensation of firmness and tightening.
How does Ulthera work?
Ulthera employs a localized heating feature with precise depth adjustment, functioning like a magnifying glass that focuses solar energy. It delivers micro-focused ultrasound energy beneath the skin’s surface without causing damage, by externally heating the tissue.
Similar to the incisions made during surgical facelift procedures, sound waves stimulate repair mechanisms in the subdermal tissue, allowing the skin to adhere to the SMAS layer. The increase in heat generated in the underlying layers of the skin initiates the skin’s self-repair process, triggering new collagen production.
Following the Ulthera procedure, eyebrows and cheeks can lift upwards, excess skin on the eyelids can be tightened, and under-eye bags may be reduced. The outcome could include tighter and firmer skin, reduced wrinkles, strengthened connective tissues, and increased collagen production, contributing to a more youthful complexion.

How is Ultherapy applied?
The specialist performing the procedure begins by placing the application head on the skin, visualizing both the skin and subcutaneous tissue, and planning the treatment area. During the Ultherapy procedure, the subcutaneous tissues are visualized on the screen, allowing the treatment to be administered as if the tissues were seen during surgery. Ultherapy employs a focused ultrasound through the Ulthera scanner. Since the depth of the SMAS varies in each individual, visualizing and targeting the SMAS is crucial for achieving the desired effect.
Due to the necessity of reaching different depths for each facial region, the scanner is used to continually monitor the process on the screen, enabling the creation of focused thermal damage zones at depths of 4.5mm, 3mm, and 1.5mm beneath the skin to help the skin adhere to the SMAS layer.
During Ultherapy, the surface of the skin may remain undamaged. The energy reaching the skin can enhance fibroblast stimulation, initiate subcutaneous tissue renewal, and promote new collagen formation, allowing the skin to adhere tightly to the SMAS. A strong ‘skin lifting’ effect occurs, resulting in a non-surgical facelift effect over time.
Ultherapy can also be used for wrinkle treatment with 1.5mm applicator heads. When using the 1.5mm applicator head, a local anesthetic cream might be needed. Unlike other laser treatments, Ultherapy for wrinkle treatment may not cause redness or peeling of the skin. The 1.5mm applicator head is particularly useful for addressing wrinkles, especially around the eyes, neck, and décolleté area.
What is felt during the application?
It can be a painless procedure even without the need for a local anesthetic cream.
Individuals often describe the sensation during the procedure as a momentary, mild needle prick, particularly in bony areas. This indicates the penetration of ultrasound energy into the deeper layers of tissue.
What happens on the skin after the application?
After an Ultherapy procedure, there might be no side effects such as burns, spots, or bruising on the skin. Individuals can typically resume their daily activities immediately after the treatment. While some individuals may experience temporary redness following the procedure, this usually returns to normal within a few hours.
Who are suitable candidates for ulthera application?
Individuals with skin looseness or sagging are generally suitable candidates for Ultherapy. Particularly, noticeable results can be achieved for individuals aged 40 to 65, as the skin structure tends to loosen within this age range. Additionally, younger individuals with relatively mild sagging, who might be too young for a surgical facelift, could be good candidates for Ultherapy. Sometimes, patients might be hesitant to undergo surgery due to complications and anesthesia concerns, in which case Ultherapy can be a viable alternative.
Ultherapy can be applied specifically to the areas of concern. Even at younger ages, specific issues might be present, such as brow-eye proximity or under-eye sagging. It is often used around the eye area, particularly to lift the brows and tighten under-eye bags.
In a study conducted by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration), a noticeable lifting effect was observed in 9 out of 10 patients in a brow lifting study. This effect contributed to a reduction in sagging around the eye area and decreased wrinkling on the eyelids.
Sometimes, even in younger individuals, nasolabial folds might appear deeper due to facial volume loss, despite their age. In such cases, Ultherapy can be applied to the cheeks to target the nasolabial folds. When the cheeks are lifted and adhered to the SMAS layer using Ultherapy, the nasolabial folds are visibly reduced, resulting in a more dynamic and youthful appearance.
Ultherapy is a single skin rejuvenation method that utilizes focused ultrasound technology. Thanks to its reliable technology, effective and satisfying results can often be achieved with a single treatment.
When will the Ultherapy effect be noticed?
Ultrason (sound waves) can penetrate deeper than lasers and radiofrequency. The Ultherapy procedure, which lasts about 35 minutes for the entire face, begins to show initial signs of skin tightening right after treatment. The desired optimal results can be achieved around 3 months after the procedure, with further improvement potentially seen at the 6-month mark.
Once the skin adheres to the SMAS layer and repair mechanisms are activated through stimulated fibroblasts, the skin can undergo a remarkable tightening effect over time, resulting in a natural ‘facelift’ effect. The results achieved after a single session can be maintained for at least 2 years.
In which problems is Ultherapy applied?
- Saggy skin around the eyes,
- Low eyebrows,
- Looseness and sagging in the chin area,
- Loss of chin contour,
- Cheek drooping,
- The corners of the mouth turn down,
- Loosening of the neck skin.
Is Ultherapy a reliable method?
Ultrasound energy has been used in medicine for more than 50 years and has proven in clinical studies that it has no side effects. Ulthera is a US FDA approved device.
What kind of result should be expected after Ulthera application?
